It is a pair of circular callipers, a scale 286 PELVIC DEFORMITIES. near the hinge indicating the space between the open endswhen applied. To measure conjugate diameter of brim, the woman lyingon her side, place one point of the instrument upon the upperedge of pubic symphysis, and the other opposite sacral pro-montory—i. e., over the depression, just below spinous processof last lumbar vertebra. Normally this should measure 7iinches. Deducting 3 J for thickness of bones and soft parts, leaves 4 inches—the normal length of the brims conjugatediameter. The degree of reduction in this measurement, al-lowing for individual variation from obesity, etc., will give, approximately, the amount of pelvic contraction, but a limitedreliance only can be placed upon this method without othercorroborative evidence of deformity.
