Pediacel combination vaccine. Pediacel vaccinates against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio and Hib infection. It contains inactivated extracts of all five organisms responsible: purified diphtheria toxoid (a toxin produced by the bacteria that causes diphtheria), purified tetanus toxoid, purified components of the bacteria that causes whooping cough, inactivated poliovirus and Haemophilus influenzae type b polysaccharide, an extract of the Hib bacteria. When injected, the vaccine stimulates the body's immune system to produce antibodies, but without causing an infection. The immune system can then respond quickly to future infections. The injection is given in three doses, at two, three and four months of age.
