In each instance iodine was readily discovered. Bacteriological investigation of the pus from eleven cases of iodineand bromine eruption, failed to discover micro-organisms except in onecase. These cultures were very carefully taken, only the pus from thedeeper portion of the unbroken lesions being used. It seems to us it isvery necessary in taking such cultures, that the skin should be thoroughlysterilized and the pus from the top of the lesion evacuated before theculture is made. By this procedure there is no danger of secondary con-. FlG. 3. In the anthracoid case there were open ulcers which dis-charged pus freely, but, surprisingly, cultures made from any part of thelesions did not reveal microorganisms. From the quantity of iodinewhich seemed to be present in the pus in the latter case, it would have beenexceedingly difficult for organisms to propagate. Histo-pathology-—We will not take your time today by giving you adetailed description of the histology of the various iodine and brominelesions investigated by us, as we feel that this subject, in a generalway, has been thoroughly discussed by others and that you are, nodoubt, familiar with it. As has already been mentioned, lesions in vari-ous stages of development, from the smallest prepapulo-pustular stage HISTO-IATHOLOGY AND THE THEORY OF DRUG ERUPTIONS. 857 to the large anthracoid variety, were included in our material.
