Cell membrane. Computer artwork of a section through an animal cell showing transmembrane proteins in the cell membrane. The membrane of the cell consists of a dual layer of phospholipids (dark blue), with the hydrophobic lipid tails in the centre and the hydrophilic phosphate groups on either side. Spanning the membrane are various transmembrane proteins. At left is a receptor protein, used to recognise specific molecules. To its right are channels that allow the movement of molecules and ions in and out of the cell. The proteins seen here are, right to left; a pore protein, a transport protein, a gated channel protein and a channel protein.
