Henderson was bom on a farm nearVersailles, Indiana, and attended the publicschool near his home until sixteen years of age,when he entered the graded school at Ver-sailles. After attending this school two yearshe got the western fever and spent three yearsin the Yellowstone National Park, North-western Montana, Idaho, Eastern Washingtonand Oregon, but becoming tired of the frontierlife he returned to his old home, and in July,1897, took a position as brakeman on thisdiWsion. J. R. Carey, at that time train-master, now general superintendent on theC. & O., hired him. He was promoted toconductor in 1904 and was appointed a memberof the Safety Committee when it was firstorganized. He has served on it continuouslyever since and has been an earnest worker inthe interest of Safety, a record of which hejustly feels proud. He also served continu-ously as secretary of the Trainmens order forten years, something no other member in lodge has ever done. He
