Musk Ox. A musk ox grazes contentedly on Graham Island in the Arctic while being photographed by a crew member of the Coast Guard icebreaker WESTWIND. The animals, having some of the characteristics of the sheep, goat and oxen combined, stand about 5 ft. high at the shoulders. Significant to their name, a peculiar musky odor can be detected from the animals at a distance as far as 100 yards. They can be trained into becoming excellent domesticants. They provide flesh meat and milk equal to that of cows. At this time, the WESTWIND was unloading supplies at Eureka weather station on Ellsmere Isl

The WESTWIND assisted a Navy Task Force Group in a joint resupply mission to Arctic weather stations during the summer of 1953.
