Profiles of the abandoned Copper Mine Buildings at Knockmahon, Near Bunmahon, in the Copper Coast Geopark, County Waterford, Ireland

The Copper Coast is the local name for the coastal area of County Waterford that extends from the growing village of Stradbally at its western end to the tiny village of Fenor in the east. It is a small, but unique part of Ireland, often unknown even by those who travel through it. Yet the Copper Coast’s unusual history is sufficient important for it to benefit from a new initiative under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) which enabled it to be designated as a Geopark. In basic terms the main rationale of the Geopark is the conservation, sustainable development and management of global areas of Geological importance. An additional consideration is their archaeological and cultural heritage along with their preservation for future generations. In addition to the restoration of the Engine House, a team of archaeologists from UCC have surveyed the entire site and marked out the location of the original walls and boundaries that have long since disappeared. A geologist has also been employed by the project to develop educational tours and walking trails along the Copper Coast, as well as other responsibilities including research and the production of educational information on the area.
