It is well known that in this variety of deformity the patientwalks upon the ball of the foot, the toes, or the metatarsopha-langeal articulations; no other portion of the foot reaches theground; and for the obvious reason that the deformity is causedby a contraction or shortening of the gastrocnemial and solealmuscles; sometimes aided by a like defect in the flexor of thetoes, which prevents the heel being pressed down ; the footbeing all the while extended on the leg. Being a contraction of these muscles, it is very rarely a con-genital affection, and consequently depends upon some traumaticcause.
