On April 7, 1799, he received hiscommission as midshipman, and on Jan. 15,1807, was promoted lieutenant. After building afleet of gunboats, he commanded the schooner Re-venge, which in 1810, cruised off the southerncoast of the United States. This vessel was wreckedon a reef near Watch Hill, Rhode Island, Jan. 8,1811, but Perry was honorably accpiitted of ne-lect or carelessness by a court of inquiry. There-after he repeatedly applied for a command at sea,which was refused, and eventually offered his ser-vices to Commodore Isaac Chauncey on the lakes,who ordered him for duty to Lake Erie. Here, atPresque Isle (now Erie), he superintended the J^ 90 PERRY —PERSIA. COMMODORE O. H. PERRV. building of a number of small vessels, the largestof which was of 500 tons burden; with them he expected to encounterthe British flotilla underCajjtain Barclay. Perryssquadron consisted ofnine vessels, of 1,671 tons,with 54 guns. On theBritish side, Captain Rob-ert Heriot Barclay had aflotilla of six vessels, of1,460 tons, manned by450 men and 63 pieces ofcannon. On Sept. 10,1813, the American forcesmoved out of Put-in-Bayfor action, and after ahard- fought contest on theafternoon of that day the British flotilla Barclay was wounded in the actioiL Perrysannouncement of the event was bv the famousdispatch : We have met the enemy and they areours. Congress bestowed on Perry the rank ofcaptain, and the British, having lost control of LakeErie,, evacuated Detroit.
