View NNW of Foale's Arrishes Bronze Age settlement & field system SE of Pil Tor, Dartmoor, Devon, England, UK. Terraced rectangular 'coaxial' fields formed by cross banks are aligned between short stretches of walling parallel to four long linear boundary 'reaves' running SE-NW. The reaves are part of the much larger Rippon Tor parallel system of prehistoric land division on Dartmoor. The NW corner of the settlement is top L with Hut 1 beside a field bank top R: there were 8 hut circles distributed amongst the Bronze Age fields. This site was once interpretted as Medieval strip fields overlying Bronze Age or Celtic fields but the smaller cross fields are clearly built up to the long linear Bronze Age reaves & shorter field banks. Rather than a permanent settlement the site may have been occupied for summer grazing, a system known as transhumance. The site was used into the Iron Age. During the C19thAD Mr Foale, keeper of the now ruined Newhouse Inn nearby, refashioned some of the walls & used the S half of the settlement for grazing & cultivation.
