Mas Chaptal, an old magnanerie (silk works) near Génolhac, Gard, France.
Mas Chaptal is an old silk mill on the outskirts of Génolhac, Gard, France. During the 19th century the area was famous for its silk production. Many of the locals raised silk worms for their cocoons. Mas Chaptal raised the worms, collected the cocoons and turned them into silk thread. The main silk works were known as magnaneries. Foreign competition and a disese that killed the trees the silk worms fed off of led to a decline in the industry. It was the birth place of the painter André Chaptal.
