Iron pulley with cobweb of the water well in Montarrenti medieval village - Montarrenti (SI), Tuscany, Italy

Montarrenti is a small medieval village in the province of Siena, Tuscany, Italy, composed of the castle, the square, minor buildings and the surrounding wall. Today some of the minor buildings are in ruins. It stands near Rosia in a strategical position on the Montagnola Senese. From Siena it can be reached following the route SS73. The most ancient information of Montarrenti (Monte Liurenti or Monte Lirrenti) dates back to 1156, when Galgano Pannocchieschi, bishop of Volterra, named the locality in a bull, but its origins seem to date between the 7th century and the first half of the 8th century. The highest tower was crenellated and it is supposed that also the lower tower was crenellated. Today the castle's hill is still dominated by two towers built in worked stone with round arched and gothic windows, loopholes, gothic and romanesque portals. The village houses a small astronomical observatory run by the Unione Astrofili Senesi.
