ARABIAN SEA (March 17, 2017) USS Makin Island (LHD 8) Commanding Officer Capt. Mark A. Melson observes a replenishment-at-sea with the fleet replenishment oiler USNS Walter S. Diehl (T-AO 193) from the starboard bridge wing of the amphibious assault ship. Makin Island is deployed in the 5th Fleet area of operations in support of maritime security operations designed to reassure allies and partners and preserve the freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce in the region.
