Horse and Cart Corn Dolly

Corn dollies can be traced back to neolithic times. The custom was to make a small figure out of some straw and leave it in the fields to propitiate the gods and ensure a good crop next year. Modern wheat has been bred to produce short straw, which is not suitable for corn dollies. Special neolithic varieties are grown for the purpose. This corn dolly was made near Great Bardfield in Essex and is part of the collection of the Great Bardfield Cottage Museum.
