Maize grown under biodegradable plastic. Plastic is used to protect the young maize plants, Zea mays, from the ravages of frost by retaining heat close to the ground. By the time the shoots are well established and growing up through the holes in the plastic its protection is no longer necessary. Use of biodegradable plastic means that it can be left to degrade rather than needing to be removed. However, new plastic must be used each year.
