The 1978 National Christmas Tree; Scope and content: The 1978 National Christmas Tree, illuminated by 1,600 low-watt gold lamps, floodlit with gold spotlights, and decorated with gold garland and 50 large red ornaments. This living tree was planted on October 11, 1978, and replaced the living tree planted in 1977 (which had been toppled and killed by high winds in a storm on January 26, 1978). This 1978 tree lived until February 19, 2011, when its trunk snapped in a windstorm which contained gusts of up to 50 mph (80 km/h).
