This image, taken from the Accademia Bridge (Ponte dell'Accademia) shows the view down the Grand Canal with Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute in the background. Santa Maria della Salute (English: Saint Mary of Health), commonly known simply as the Salute, is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica located at Punta della Dogana in the Dorsoduro sestiere of the city of Venice, Italy. It stands on the narrow finger of Punta della Dogana, between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal, at the Bacino di San Marco, making the church visible when entering the Piazza San Marco from the water. The Salute is part of the parish of the Gesuati and is the most recent of the so-called plague-churches. In 1630, Venice experienced an unusually devastating outbreak of the plague. As a votive offering for the city's deliverance from the pestilence, the Republic of Venice vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or of Deliverance, Italian: Salute). The church was designed in the then fashionable baroque style by Baldassare Longhena, who studied under the architect Vincenzo Scamozzi. Construction began in 1631. Most of the objects of art housed in the church bear references to the Black Death. The Accademia Bridge is a bridge in the city of Venice , which together with the Rialto Bridge, the Scalzi bridge and the bridge of the Constitution are the only four that cross the Grand Canal . The original bridge was made of iron and was inaugurated on November 20 of 1854. Immediately after the opening of the first bridge was called tender for the construction in the same place a stone bridge. The winning project (Torres and Briazza) was never made. Subsequently, replacing iron bridge a wooden bridge it was constructed from project engineer Eugenio Miozzi ( 1889 - 1979 ). It was inaugurated on January 15th of 1933. Subsequent interventions have been added to the original bridge iron elements. The bridge length is 48 m. Source: Wikipedia.
