Tree of Jesse. 12th-century artwork of a version of a medieval depiction of the ancestry of Christ, known as the Tree of Jesse. At bottom is Jesse of Bethlehem, the father of King David, lying in a coffin with a halo. Normally the roundels would show the ancestors of Jesus, but here they contain doves that represent the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Artwork from the Siegburg Lectionary dating from the second quarter of the 12th century and produced at the Abbey of St Michael, Siegburg, Germany.
