Salmonella bacteria research. Microbiologist analysing petri dish cultures for the presence of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium in the faeces of swine (pigs). Normally transmitted through contaminated food, salmonella bacteria cause fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhoea. In the elderly, infants, and those with weakened immune systems, the disease can be fatal. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the US Department of Agriculture. Photographed in the USA.
