East Isley, West Berkshire Wednesday 10th August 2016 FOUR people have been killed and a dozen injured after an eight-vehicale crash on the A34 at East Ilsley earlier today. The A34 northbound has been completely blocked since following a crash between four lorries and four cars while the southbound carriageway only re-opened at Police have said a man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is currently in custody. The incident happened at near East Ilsley on the A34 between High Street and Bury Lane, and traffic was eft at standstill for miles in both directions. Police, firefighters, six ambulance teams, a hazardous response team, and The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and Thames Valley Air Ambulance all attended. At South Central Ambulance Service confirmed four people were pronounced dead at the scene. One man was flown to the John Radcliffe Hospital with life-threatening injuries, two people were driven by land ambulance to Royal Berkshire Hospital with minor injuries and nine more were treated at the scene by paramedics but needed no hospital treatment. Traffic is not moving on the A34 northbound as the road is completely closed and will not re-open for a significant amount of time, police say. The A34 southbound at West Illsey was also closed so an air ambulance could land, but could re-open in about an hour. Senior investigating officer at Thames Valley Police Insp Andy Storey said: "Officers are currently on the scene responding to this fatal collision. All motorists should avoid the area, use alternative routes and await further updates before attempting to travel on this route. We appreciate motorists’ patience while we deal with this incident. "I would like to appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision, including anyone travelling on the southbound carriageway who saw anything they believe is significant, to contact police."
