Wherever the product of the NaumkeagSteam Cotton Company of Salem, Mass.,has been shipped, the standard of excel-lence of Pequot in sheets and pillow-cases has been maintained, according to thebusiness maxim of the company. This hasbeen accomplished by specialization andstrictest attention to quality and appearance. The Company was established and incor-porated in 1839, largely through Salem andEssex County interests, although buildingdid not begin until 1845. The project tobuild a cotton mill in Salem was regardedas most unusual, since until that time suchfactories had been built alongside a w^atercourse. The engineer in charga, however,thought the atmospheric conditions suitablefor spinning and weaving, like those near astream, might be found beside the sea. A
