Caption: Allappey, Kerala, India - May 2003. The captain of a houseboat guides his vessel through Kerala's myriad of backwaters, or natural canals that meander along the coastline. A highway for transport and hauling cargo, these backwaters are lined with a plethora of villages which depend on the canals. Recent years have seen the backwaters taken over by another force: the houseboat. Made from old rice barges converted into rustic houses, houseboats are the latest in floating hotels.
