Painted Hills region of the John Day Fossile Beds National Monument near Mitchell, Oregon. Hills are composed of clay that formed from volcanic ash deposits dating to 44 million years ago. Golden bee plant (Cleome platycarpa) grow in the narrow crevices among the hills, where they find enough moisture to survive.
