Islet amyloid polypeptide fibril, illustration

Illustration of a fibril of the islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP). Amyloid fibrils result from the misfolding of proteins. Plaques of these fibrils form in various organs and are associated with disease, IAPP is found in the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. The build-up of IAPP fibrils is associated with the loss of beta cells, the cells that produce insulin, and implicated in type 2 diabetes.
