PH^THORNIS SUPERCILIOSUS. (From Elliot.) THE MULE BOAD AND GUADUAS. 109. CHltYSOLAMPIS MOSCHITUS. (Froiii Elliot.; ruby feathers on the crown and a few topaz ones on the we saw great numbers of hnniniino-birds, we had to selectour shots carefully, for if onefell in the thick underbrush,it was a hopeless task tolook for it. We found thatwe had either to wait untilthey were over an open spaceor else shoot them immedi-ately overhead, so that theywoidd drop at our feet, andeven then we lost a good third new kind that I killed was a small bird, green above, green and white below^, chin, spot back of eye, and flanks white, and gorget amethyst. Its tailwas peculiar, black, and forked, the two outer feathers on each sidebeing reduced almost to a bare stem [Acestrura inidsanti). In the grove we picked some of the most delicious oranges thatI ever tasted. We started back to the hotel shortly after ten oclock, and on our w^ay stopped to fish in the little stream that we used grasshoppers for bait, and in a few minutes caught a half doze
