• Column of Marcus Aurelius known as the Aurelian Column in Piazza Colonna Rome


The Column of Marcus Aurelius was built between AD 180 and AD 196 as a gift by the Senate and the people of Rome and erected near the emperor's own temple, the Temple of the Deified Marcus. Also known as the Aurelian Column -it commemorates emperor Marcus Aurelius' military campaigns against Germanic tribes and the Sarmatians. It is modeled on Trajan's Column, built 80 years earlier after emperor Trajan's successful campaign in Aurelian Column is 30 meters high and is made from 28 blocks of Carrara marble. It stands on a rectangular pedestal and has a spiraling band of reliefs depicting events during the imperial campaigns in the North.
