Telegraph Address: NEW SALEM, MASS. CULTURE OF SOLANUMS. About last March we planted Jeru- salem cherry seed in flat boxes, and about a month ago we lifted the plants and placed them in individual pots. We have about 150 of these, each about four to six indies in height. None of them has had blooms, and we are wondering what is wrong, since we expected we should have cherries on them for the holidays. Of course, we realize that if we had grown them in the field we should have attained better results; still, the plants look healthy. Did we plant them too late? Do they require a great deal of moisture? Should the soil be rich? F. B.—Mich. March was a suitable time to sow the solaiHini seed. You made a great mis- take in retaining the plants in flats through the summer; the plants would be starved under such conditions. The ])roper treatment would be to plant the seedlings outdoors about the middle of May in soil which is not too rich. If it is too rich, the plants make a too luxuriant growth and do not fruit so heavily as when they are in poorer soil. Lift and pot the solanums early in Sep- tember, endeavoring to secure some ball on each, and pot them firmly in good soil. Spray them freely until the wilt- ing ceases. The ])lants may be kept in a cnldframe until the end of October; after this give them a cool, sunny house and they shoTild be well ripened for Thanksgiving and Christmas trade. The plants should go in ."j-inch and 6-inch pots, and they will fruit abundantly. It will not pay you to retain the plants yon have. They are only occupy- ing space which can be more profitably.
