The attractiveness, strength and lightness of this roof is Obvious. It is formed oftwo eccentric arches, and is a much stronger roof than is pos-sible in monitor form. It allows increased head room, affordsby automatic ventilators in the top a uniform and adequate ven-tilation, and permits of the double sash and high window, notpossible with the old form of roof. The roof is supported byvertical rust-proofed (in black) steel tubes, which serve also asgrab rails instead of the usual strap; these vertical tubes are, inturn, supported by the longitudinal lattice steel girder, which alsosupports the seat and serves as a battery case and back boneon each side for the entire car structure. The horizontal steel. THE EDISON a8 STOR.^GE BATTERY. tubes, which are enameled white, serve as conduits for the light-ing cables, and supports for the lamp, bell and fare register cordfixtures. Notwithstanding the steel construction, the entire weight, complete with iSo A8 cells of battery, is about 30,000 lbs., orabout 725 lbs. of dead weight per seated passenger. Careful design, selection and distribution of materials, elimination of alluseless fixtures and weight in materials, such as the archedinstead of monitor deck roof, the open instead of the full bulk-heads, etc., has made possible this great reduction in dead weightand still permitted a safe factor of strength. The interior is provided with 10 lamps There is such alamp on each platform, and lamp of larger capacity in eachlieadlight carried in multiple arc, so that any number may beused, and their current is taken from a special set of batterycells, which are charged, however, in series with the power
