Male eastern Hercules beetle (Dynastes tityus) feeding of the sap of a sweet gum tree. Beetle uses sharp projections beneath its lower "horn" to scrape away the outer bark, causing the sap to flow. Photo shows a fly attracted to the flow of sap. At 40-62 mm, this species is one of the largest beetles in North America.
