These birds inhabit thecold and frigid zones of both continents, living in the opensea, or in channels and bays, during the greater part of theyear, and feeding chiefly on bivalve shell-fish, for which theydive. In summer most of them betake themselves to thearctic regions, where they nestle on the shores of the sea, onislands, or in the turf of rocky places, forming a bulky nest, lined with down, and laying a moderate number of large, smooth, gi-eenish-white eggs. Their flight is steady, direct, moderately rapid, and performed by quick beats. Theyswim and dive expertly, remain long under the water, and aremore or less gregarious, even in the breeding season. Thedown, which lines the nests, or is intermingled with theeggs, and been plucked by the female from her breast,is collected in large quantities in some northern localities. 147 SOMATERIA MOLLISSIMA.
