Snowy Lower Road, Dean Head, Scammonden, crossing hills slope fields towards sun sinking grey clouds, South Pennines, Kirklees, West Yorkshire, UK

The winter of 2010-2011 included the UK's coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December 2010 temperature in the UK was minus one degree Celsius. In some places the temperature reached minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees F). Late November to Boxing Day 2010 experienced two spells of severe winter weather with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The first spell lasted two weeks from Thursday, 25 November to Thursday, 9 December. The UK was under the influence of a prolonged north-easterly airstream drawing bitterly cold air from Northern Europe and Siberia. Lower Road, Dean Head, Scammonden, in the South Pennine hills, south-west of Halifax, crossing snowy hill slope fields with drystone walls, towards a bright sun shining through grey clouds gathering on the western horizon.
