The low interior moun-tain ranges cause only a slight rainfall which supplies thesalt lakes of the interior. During the southern winter the interior becomes cold,and the heavy air presses outward toward the coast ascold land winds;but during thesummer the dryinterior is so in-tensely heatedthat monsoonwinds blow fromthe northeast andbring equatorialrain to the north-ern coasts. Inthis section arefound areas oftropical andTasmania arereached by theprevailing west-erlies, with their cyclonic storms, which bring variableweather and rainfall, as in eastern United States. Theserainy sections are also clothed with forests.
