I met this young lady in Guamote, Ecuador, far from where most foreigners visit. Guamote is a tiny village in the Andes Mountains. This girl was sent by her parents who live a day's walk away to find work. When I met her she was working in a small store helping to maintain the shop clean and keep the small stock of food organized. Many youngsters are sent off to find work because the family simply cannot support them. Usually families are large and the newest members and babies receive the most care. This young and mature girl was only twelve when I took her portrait.
