Endometrium and blood supply. Illustration of the structure of the endometrium, the lining of the uterus (womb). The endometrium consists of a single layer of columnar epithelium (top) plus the underlying stroma (centre). The functional layer thickens and then detaches and is lost during the menstrual cycle. The blood supply includes spiral arteries (shown here) that help identify the phases of the menstrual cycle. Tubular uterine glands are also present (light red, opening to surface), as well as veins (blue). The uterine glands extend from the epithelium to the base of the stroma.
