The Anatomy Lesson of dr Jan Deijman ( fragment ) 1656 Rembrandt Harmenz van Rijn 1606 - 1669 Dutch, The Netherlands, Holland. (detail) Rembrandt’s second anatomy lesson is a fragment of a group portrait. In 1723 most of the canvas was destroyed by fire. The remaining central section shows Dr Jan Deijman performing an autopsy on a dead men’s brains. The assistant is holding the top of the skull. Rembrandt has presented the dead man in a foreshortening so that the dissecting table appears to be protruding out of the picture.
