Portable chemical detector research. Technician testing a portable detector that uses ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) to identify chemicals. This is a Lightweight Chemical Detector (LCD) produced by the Smiths Detection company, a division of the global technology multinational Smiths Group. An LCD samples the air continuously and can detect a range of toxic chemicals within seconds, triggering an alarm. LCDs are used by emergency workers and military personnel in many countries worldwide. In the UK, Smiths Detection's work on LCDs won a Queen's Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category for 2011.
