As these benchesget rough usage it is desirable to make them as rugged as possible and at the sametime they should presentan attractive appearance. A concrete bench whichmeets these requirementsand one which can bereadily made by the rail-ways own men is shownin the illustrations. Theforms for the concrete aremade of 4-in. planks whichare bolted to a baseboardfrom which they are re-moved as soon as possibleafter the concrete has set. The concrete is a 1:1:2mixture, the coarse aggregate consisting of 3 gravel. Four %-in. square rods 8 ft. long andtwisted are used in each of the standards, and two rodsof the same cross-section but 1 ft. 4 in. long are placedin the brackets underneath the seat.
