This photo dates to September 5, 1923. The caption reads: What a Bomber from the air can do to a battleship: The doomed battleship Virginia - Seven Minutes Before Noon. This was just before an 1100-pound bomb exploded alongside. She sunk within 20 minutes. In 1922, the War Department classified the Virginia as a target ship for bombing tests, along with her sister ship the USS New Jersey. The New Jersey was bombed first and sunk and then the Virginia.
