Tlic name of Wheeling was orhjiinaWy Weeling, which in the Delaware lan-guage signifies the phice of a licnd. At a very early day, some whites de-scending the Ohio in a boat, stopped at the mouth of the creek and were mur-dered by Indians. The savages cut ofi the head of one of their victims, andplacing it on a pole with its face toward the rivei*, called the spot i- V (!( .^^^
