The Battle of Solebayoccurred twenty-four days after the Queens visit; and thiswould probably account for its appearance in conjunctionwith the other pictures, as his worship would Very probablylike to commemorate two such importants events occurringduring his mayoralty, as the Royal visit to Sandwich, andthe death of the celebrated Earl of Sandwich, Admiral of the * Used probably round the ropes to prevent the hands being torn by OLD PAINTED PANELS AT SANDWICH. 14/7 Blue. This, however, supposes that the house in HarnetStreet at one time belonged to Mr. Coombes, but I have beenunable to trace in the title-deeds, which do not reach backfurther than 1742, any reference to him, or to Mr. TobiasCleere ; while I must admit that, though the house in HarnetStreet was in St. Marys Parish, Mr. Coombes was buried inSt. Clements in 1694, Dec. 23, and was described in theburial register as a housekeeper. On the other hand, Cleere did die in St. Marys parish, 1679, Sept. 2,though he was buried at St. Clements. It is possible, how-ever, that Mr. Coombes may have left his house in HarnetStreet before his death; but, whatever the explanation maybe, that Mr. Coombes was Mayor at the time of the Queensvisit, and that 1672 was the date, I consider to be conclu-sively proved by the Treasurers book. It remains to ascertain, if possible, who the painter was;but this I must leave to connoisseurs, as the
