Hall, son of Alfred Gordon and Maria Lydia (Whiting) Hall, wasborn in Portland, Conn., February 6, 1837, and died at St. Louis, Mo., Sep-tember 15, 1867; was buried in Trinity Cemetery, Portland, Conn. He pre- 568 NORWICH UNIVERSITY. [1855 pared for college in the schools of his town, and Chases school, Middletown,Conn. He entered the University in 1851, remaining three years. After leaving the University, he retained. his interest in military matters, andserved on the staff of Colonel, after-wards General Starr, of the oldConnecticut militia, previous to thewar of the Rebellion. He workedfor his father in his quarry in Port-land, 1854-61. He enlisted October 20, 1861;raised a company of infantry atPortland, Conn., and vicinity, andwent to the front as adjutant of the9th Regiment, Connecticut Voliui-teers; served on the staff of GeneralPhelps; was in the expedition thatlanded at Ship Island, MississippiSound, and was stationed for sometime in New Orleans, after its was commissioned Heutenant-col-onel, 2d Louisiana Guards, October21, 1862; was in command of FortPike on Lake Pontchartrain Alfred Gordon Hall. New Orleans, until the close of the war. He remained in the South during the entire war, without a fur-lough. He married Sarah Nevers , who died about 1890; one child, ^YhitneyFoster.
