One ofthe objects in making the machine on the angle is to bringthe front roller nearer the ground and allow of larger rollersbeing used. We would here mention that there is a tendencyto increase the diameters of rollers on these machines, In theearly days 9 x 18 was the standard in the Federated MalayStates; then came the 12 x 15, and recently orders have beenplaced for machines with rollers 14 x 24- The larger machinesnaturally take more power to drive, but they do more work and. Fig. 51.—Bridges Patent Angle Roller Mill. the rollers last much longer. It ma} strike the reader that theidea of increasing the diameter of the roll is to increase theperipheral speed, but this is not so; there is a limit to the peri-pheral speed of rollers in washing, sheeting and creping. Theend wheels are of the usual friction speed which varies with themethod of treating the rubber. These belt-driven machinesare principally used in Ceylon, and here we may remark thatthere they are not quite up to the Federated Malay States levelin engineering ideas. The machine type is a standard type of machine forthe Federated Malay States driven by machine-cut gearing andfriction-clutch driven direct from the shafting at theback of the machine. This machine is self-contained, all the MACHINERY AND MANUFACTURE 193 brackets relating to the clutch-drive being attached to the bed-plate of the machine. Very great improvements have been made regarding thequie
