In the latter year hewas chairman of the committee in charge of thememorial services on the death of Charles Sumner,and compiled a memorial history of that 1872, when the Highland Street Railway wasorganized, Mr. Merrill was chosen president of theroad, and this office he held until the company wasabsorbed by the \\est End Street Railway Com-pany, in 1886. Prior to the existence of the High-land Railway the Metropolitan Road had beenwithout a competitor, and the new rival, with thevaluable improvements it adopted, compelled manychanges for the better. In 1886 Mr. Merrill se-cured the passage of the bill authorizing all thestreet railways of Boston to consolidate. He wasalso largely instrumental in establishing the famousBoston park system, which, when completed, will. BOSTON OF TO-DAY. be one of the finest in the world. In 1880 he wasa Republican member of the Massachusetts electoralcollege. After that he took no active part in politicsuntil the fall of 1890, when he was the Republicancandidate for mayor of Boston.
