Antarctic landscape. View across red and green algal blooms in Antactica, towards snow-covered mountains in the distance. A group of penguins can also be seen (upper centre). Antarctica's freezing temperatures, poor soil quality, and lack of moisture and sunlight, inhibit the growth of vegetation. As a result the majority of plant life is made up of lichens, bryophytes, algae, and fungi. Growth generally occurs in the summer, and only for a few weeks at most. Photographed at Port Charcot, Antarctic Peninsula, in January.
