Bilateral inguinal hernia emerging from an 81 year old man's groin. A hernia is the protrusion of an organ or tissue through a rupture in the wall of a body cavity. An inguinal hernia occurs when a sac of peritoneum (membrane surrounding the abdominal organs), containing an intestinal loop, bulges through the abdominal wall into the groin. This hernia is most common in men and may result from physical straining such as coughing. Large hernias are corrected surgically. The protruding intestine is replaced in the abdomen and the abdominal wall is strengthened. A catheter (centre left) has been inserted into the patient's penis. The patient also has an enlarged prostate gland.
