The cones, beforebecoming ripe, and when they have attained tofull size, are highly ornamental, and remarkablyweighty from the great quantity of resin they con-tain. They are about 7 inches long, of a deeppurple colour, and generally several occur on thesame branch ; indeed, with their number andweight, I have more than once seen large branchesbroken off the trees. So strikingly different ingeneral appearance is this tree that no mistakecan ever occur in confusing it with any otherspecies. Where it does well, the growth is longand stout, but too frequently the tips of thebranches are bitten by frost in early spring, andwhen this has occurred several times the treewears a by no means pleasing appearance. Usuallythe tree does well and escapes frost-bite whenplanted in cold and stiffish soil and facing north. Face page 26. ABIES \HITlHII. HARDY CONIFEROUS TREES 27 or east; but the finest specimen I have seen, andfrom which these notes were compiled, was growingin damp alluvial deposit and within sea this species and the variety have attainedto large dimensions at Penrhyn Castle, NorthWales. The collection of coniferous trees in thepark at Penrhyn is particularly rich, includinglarge specimens of Cunninghamia sinensis (nowremoved), Cephalotaxus pedunculata fastigiata, aswell as many of the rarer species of Abies, Picea, and Finns, It had attained to a height of 58 feetin thirty-two years, and contained fully 37 feetof timber. On several occasions I have examinedhome-grown timber of the tree in question, butit was soft, and did not last long when used outof doors. A. WEBBIANA PiNDROW,
