Up to the year 1861 my life flowed in the usual chanel. But for important breaks & changes, other than those which usually fall to the lot of man The spring of 1861 found me in business, conducting in connection with one Wm Blake[William Blake] the tinning & Plumbing business in St. Louis Missouri, at this period, I was measurably succesfull, I owned a home. A residence which I had built some ten years previous. I had however, from time to time, had improved this house, In the year 1857 I had remodeled & improved it, to the extent of making it quite commanding, & comfortable. I had three living children at this period, & a wife, who was then & is now, the darling, & idle of my heart, My whole, & highest ambition was for the elevation, & prosperity & happiness of these darling[s] who were given me, to love & take care off. From this period 1857, up to the spring of 1861, the lives of myself & family flowed on as stated, evenly & happily, no break occurring to cause us any marked unhappiness, My ambition at this period, & for the years immedeately prior thereto was for the happiness, elevation & education of my three darling children, named respectively Ella J.
