The Tower of Brounisfelde, belonging to the brave knight Sir Alan de Lawdre, the venerableTower of Merchiston Castle, and the Peel Tower of Wrychtis-houses, were all much older than the Chapelof St. Roque. Merchestoune stood at the extreme west of the Burghmuir, and the latter midwaybetween it and the city. Both were owned by different branches of the ancient family of Napier—one ofwhom, William Napier of Wrychtis-houses, was Constable of Edinburgh Castle in 1390, and others filledthe office of Provost in the reigns of James 11. and James iii.
