Edison phonograph demonstration, in Mathew Brady's photographic studio, Washington DC, USA, on 18 April 1878. US inventor Thomas Alva Edison (seated, 1847-1931) is operating the phonograph's handle. Standing are reporter for The Philadelphia Inquirer Uriah H. Painter (left, 1837-1900), and Charles W. Batchelor (right, 1845-1910), Edison's associate and fellow inventor. Edison and Batchelor developed the phonograph in 1877. A needle both recorded and played back sounds on and from tin foil on a cylinder. Edison was in Washington DC to address a meeting of the US National Academy of Sciences.
