LEPTOSPIRA, TEM

Leptospira are finely coiled motile bacteria belonging to the genus Leptospira causing leptospirosis. These bacteria are harbored by wild and domestic animals including the rat and the dog. Humans can be contaminated by contact with water contaminated by rat urine, for example swimming in contaminated lakes or rivers. Sewage workers are particularly exposed to leptospirosis. The disease can be prevented by vaccination. Clinical signs include severe jaundice and internal bleeding, particularly the kidney and other organs. Antibiotic treatment should be given for 15 days.
